  • Look Inside

We report a case of unilateral corneal degeneration with yellowish material caused by corneal abrasion. The findings of slit-lamp biomicroscopy and patient's subjective symptoms in the right eye were the same as those of gelatinous drop-like corneal dystrophy.

Examination of the left eye by slit-lamp revealed fine scattering diffuse opacity in the subepithelial layer, though there were neither glue deposits nor epithelial erosion on the surface. Histochemical microscopic study of the corneal button after lamellar keratoplasty showed absence of Bowman's layer and existance of Congo red stain positive amyloid deposits in the subepithelial and first third of anterior stromal lesion.Electron microscopic findings were amyloid fibrils in the degenerated superficial layers, basal cells, and cytoplasm of stromal cells.

The findings of the fellow eye indicate that the cornea in this case is in danger of degeneration. Iatrogenic corneal abrasion or ophthalmic medicines may have accelerated the latent amyloid production in the affected eye.
