  • Look Inside

We reviewed the incidence of ocular trauma while skiing during the past three winter seasons. About 1,200 patients sought medical treatment per season for accidents related to skiing in our hospital. Head and face injuries accounted for about 20% of the patients, showing an increase by 6% during the 3 years. Incidence of ocular trauma numbered 33 in 1992, 58 in 1993 and 61 in 1994. Laceration of eyelids was the most frequent ocular injury. There were 6 cases of blowout fracture of orbit in the last season, presumably by blow while wearing sunglasses or ski goggles. Due efforts are imperative to avoid ski injuries and to protect the eye.
