We quantitated the area of the optic disc and lamina cribrosa in 36 eyes with glaucomatous optic atrophy and 32 eyes with nonglaucomatous one. Scanning laser ophthalmoscope with 780nm light and image analyzer were used in the evaluation. The area of lamina cribrosa measured 2,578.4±1,346.1μm2 in the former group and 334.2±103.2μm2 in the latter. The difference was significant. Both values were significant-ly larger than in normal eyes. The area of lamina cribrosa enlarged along with progression of visual fielddefect in glaucomatous optic atrophy. The present method allows identification of optic atrophy and evaluation of its severity.
