  • Look Inside

We measured serum-specific IgE antibodies using radioallergosorbent test (RAST) on 13 allergens in 37 patients with definite Sjögren's syndrome. A total of 12 eyes, 32%, were RAST-positive. There was no significant difference in findings of various clinical tests related to dry eye between RAST-positive and -negative patients. When the severity of dry eye was defined by rose bengal staining score, the severity was positively correlated with the RAST positivity rate and inversely with the tear clearance test value. These findings suggest that type I allergy is involved in Sjögren's syndrome.
