  • Look Inside

To evaluate the inhibitory effect of 0.1% fluor-ometholone (FML) eye drops on histamine release into lacrimal fluid, ocular provocation tests with antigen were performed in 11 patients with Japanese cedar pollinosis during the off-season. The patients received FML eye drops by topical application in their right eyes and placebo eye drops in their left eyes. Ten minutes later, cedar antigen solution at 1: 20 w/v was applied to theireyes to induce an allergic reaction. The amount of histamine in their lacrimal fluid 5 and 10 minutes after provocation indicated significantly greater inhibition of histamine release in the FML-treated eyes than in the control eyes (p<0.01 after 5 minutes: p<0.02 after 10 minutes). The rate of histamine release inhibition by FML eyes drops was 69.7% 5 minutes and 67.9% 10 minutes after provo-cation. These results suggest that the anti-allergic action of 0.1% FML eye drops may involve the effect of inhibiting histamine release.
