  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We evaluated 72 patients with Sjögren's syn-drome regarding subjective and objective features of eye complications. Another series of 16 normal subjects were studied as control. Sensation of dry-ness of the eye and eye fatigue was the most com-mon complaint at 73% each. Tear clearance and reflex tearing with nasal stimulation were signifi-cantly lower in the patients than in controls (p<0.01, p<0.05). This finding was suggestive of disorder in the dynamics of tear fluid and decrease of reflex tearing in the syndrome. Specular micro-scopy showed elongation of corneal epithelium and nucleated epithelial cells in 8 affected pati-ents, 15%. These cells seemed to appear during the heal-ing process of corneal erosion. Brash cytology showed the populations of lymphocytes in the tar-sal and bulbar conjunctiva to be higher than in controls (p<0.01, p<0.05). Lymphocyte infiltra-tion in the conjunctiva seemed to be a primary process, and not secondary to dessication of ocular surface.
