We evaluated the long-term result of panretinal photocoagulation for diabetic retinopathy. The series comprised 73 eyes, 43 patients, including preproliferative retinopathy 25 eyes 19 cases and proliferative retinopathy 48 eyes 31 cases. The ages of patients ranged from 30 to 76 years, average 51 years. The follow-up period ranged from 60 to 150 months, average 93 months. During 2 years after panretinal photocoagulation, the visual acuity de-creased by 2 or more lines in 10 eyes, 40%, withpreproliferative retinopathy and in 15 eyes, 31%, with proliferative retinopathy. At the final exami-nation, the incidence was 13 eyes, 52% for the former and 20 eyes, 42% for the latter. Cystoid macular edema or macular degeneration after pro-longed macular edema was the major cause of visual deterioration in 10 eyes, 77%, with pre-proliferative retinopathy and in 10 eyes, 50%, with proliferative retinopathy. Final visual acuity was 0.5 or better in 11 eyes, 44%, with preproliferative retinopathy and in 25 eyes, 52%, with proliferative retinopathy.
