We evaluated the relationship between the age of onset and refractive error in posterior vitreous detachment in 818 eyes, 700 patients. The series comprised 198 eyes of 171 males and 620 eyes of 529 females seen during a 12-year period. Eyes with vitreoretinal diseases other than myopia were ex-cluded. Diagnosis was made with Goldmann 3-mirror lens or +90D lens with slitlamp biomi-crocope. In the diagnosis of partial or complete posterior vitreous detachment, we followed the diagnositic criteria of sheet-like structure, ascen-sion phenomenon or whip-lash phenomenon in the vitreous cavity.

There was a positive correlation between the age of onset, Y, and refractive error, X, with the regres-sion line: Y=0.86X+61.21 and the correlation co-efficient of 0.400 (p<0.01). The age of onset aver-aged 61.6 years for males and 60.6 for females. The difference was significant (p<0.05). There was no correlation between the laterality of posterior vitre-ous detachment and age of onset. According to the above regression line, the estimated age of poste-rior vitreous detachment will be 61 years in eyes with emmetropia, 57 in eyes with myopia of -5D, 53 in -10D, 44 in -20D and 35 in -30D.
