  • Look Inside

We observed 3 children in whom lattice degenera-tion seemed to have induced retinal detachment. The first case, a 4-year-old boy, presented with severe rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, PVRD2, in his highly myopic right eye. The path-ogenesis of the retinal break could not be identified. The fellow eye showed well-developed lattice degeneration with trophic retinal holes. A similar lesion seemed to have caused the retinal detach-ment in the affected eye. The other 2 cases wereboys, aged 5 years each. Retinal detachment with lattice degeneration was present in one eye each. The fellow eyes showed well-developed lattice degeneration with trophic retinal holes and sub-clinical retinal detachment. These eyes were moder-ately myopic. We performed scleral buckling proce-dure in all the 3 eyes. The fellow eyes were treated by cryopexy. In one of 2 eyes with subclinical retinal detachment, the detachment later extended to involve the macula. This was successfully treat-ed by scleral buckling procedure. To our klowled-ge, these 3 cases are the youngest ones of retinal detachment caused by lattice degeneration. It is to be noted that lattice degeneration may induce retinal detachment at an early age of 4 or 5 years.
