  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

To investigate the incidence of corneal erosion after cataract extraction, we perfomed Schirmer test, rose bengal staining and corneal sensitivity testing in 150 eyes prior to cataract extraction. Corneal erosion was seen in 2 of the 70 eyes (2.9%) in which the value of Schirmer test was 10 mm or more, but it was seen in 11 of the 80 eyes (13.8%) in which the value of Schirmer test was 9 mm or less. There was a statistical difference (p<0.05) between the incidence of corneal erosion in normal and hypolacrimative eyes. There was no statistical relationship between the incidence of corneal ero-sion and rose bengal staining or corneal sensitivity testing. Hypolacrimation appeared to be one of the causative factors of corneal erosion after cataract extraction.
