  • Look Inside

We reviewed a series of 30 eyes of retinal detach-ment in aphakic phakic and pseudophakic eyes during the foregoing 5-year period. The type of cataract was senile in 21 eyes, traumatic in 4, congenital 3, complicated in 1 and unidentified in 1. Intracapsular cataract extraction had been perfor-med in 16 eyes, extracapsular extraction (ECCE) in 12 and ECCE with posterior chamber lens implanta-tion in 2. The interval between prior cataract sur-gery and retinal detachment averaged 3.5 years for senile cataract and 38.7 years for congenital cata-ract. Retinal break could be detected in 73% of eyes in the whole series.

Postsurgical retinal reattachment was most favorable after ECCE at 75%. The vitreous loss due to cataract surgery did not affect the rate of suc-cess for retinal detachment.
