Abstract Purpose:To report three cases of terminal cancer patients who underwent cataract surgery

Case report:[Case 1]A 65-year-old man was diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma and lumbar vertebrae metastasis. Systemic chemotherapy and lumbar radiation were started. He underwent cataract surgery in the left eye. Preoperative visual acuity was 0.5 in the left eye. The left eye was free of intra or postoperative complications. Best-corrected visual acuity was 1.2 in the left eye postoperatively. He died 6 weeks after the surgery.

[Case 2]A 76-year-old man was diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma and thoracic vertebrae and brain metastases. Systemic chemotherapy, thoracic vertebrae radiation, and γknife were started. He underwent cataract surgery in both eyes. Preoperative visual acuity was 0.3 in the right eye and 0.2 in the left eye. Both eyes were free of intra or postoperative complications. Best-corrected visual acuity was 1.2 in both eyes postoperatively. He died 10 months after surgery.

[Case 3]An 80-year-old man was diagnosed with left lung adenocarcinoma and right lung metastasis. Systemic chemotherapy was started. He underwent cataract surgery in the right eye. Preoperative visual acuity was 0.5 in the right eye, and it was free of intra or postoperative complications. Best-uncorrected visual acuity was 1.2 in the right eye postoperatively. He died 4 months after surgery.

Conclusion:We report 3 cases of terminal cancer patients who underwent cataract surgery.

In the short term, all 3 cases were free of intra or postoperative complications.

Cataract surgery can improve QOL in terminal cancer patients.
