Abstract Purpose:Prenatal diagnosis of anophthalmia and microphthalmia by fetal ultrasound is increasingly accurate with advances in recent years. We report three cases of anophthalmia diagnosed by fetal ultrasonography.

Cases:Three patients(two boys and one girl), two cases of binocularity and one case of monocularity, The average number of weeks in which the fetal ultrasound was performed was 25±4 weeks, and the average week of birth was 37±4 days. Two cases of anomaly(both with cleft lip and palate)and two cases of anophthalmia with orbital cyst.

Progress:Three cases of anophthalmia were noted on ultrasound in the last trimester of pregnancy. One patent had a genetic mutation(TFAP2A genetic mutation, branchio-oculo-facial syndrome:BOFS). Prenatal diagnosis allowed us time to explain the disease to parents even before birth, and to develop a plan for testing and treatment in preparation for after birth to address the disease. Prenatal diagnosis allowed insertion of dilated prostheses at an early age in all three cases.

Conclusion:Diagnosis of prenatal anophthalmia and microphthalmia by prenatal fetal ultrasonography enabled early creation of a postnatal treatment plan and insertion of a dilated prosthesis.
