Abstract Purpose:We conducted a survey of the use of activity support of low vision(LV)outpatient services at Inoue Eye Hospital.

Subjects and Methods:The study included 206 patients who visited the LV outpatient clinic during a one-year period from January 2021. A retrospective survey was conducted on the status of the use of activity support.

Results:The age of the LV outpatients ranged from 9 to 97 years(mean 59.0 years). There were 114 male and 92 female patients. Of these, 25(12%)were users of the activity support, and their age ranged from 19 to 90 years(mean 61.3 years). The user group included 11 male and 14 female patients, of which 10 were aged 65 years or older. The causative diseases among the users of activity support were retinitis pigmentosa in 9 cases, glaucoma in 6 cases, optic nerve disease in 5 cases, retinal choroidal atrophy in 1 case, and other diseases in 4 cases. The utilization of visual impairment handbook was observed in 11 cases for Level 1, 10 cases for Level 2, 2 cases for Level 4, and 2 cases for Level 5. On the other hand, 49 cases of LV outpatients used training for walking, and 12 cases used it in combination with activity support. Moreover, 25 patients aged were 65 years or older were using long-term care insurance, and 10 patients were using activity support.

Conclusions:The utilization rate of activity support among patients who visited the LV outpatient clinic of Inoue Eye Hospital was 12%, and 84% of them had severe disabilities of Levels 1 and 2 of the visual impairment handbook. On the other hand, the utilization rate of training for walking was 24% and that of long-term care insurance was 27%. The activity support is a system that can help patients and their families, and it is necessary to further educate the LV outpatient at our hospital.
