Abstract Purpose:To report the clinical characteristics and quality of life(QOL)in patients of glaucoma or retinitis pigmentosa(RP).

Cases and Method:This study was made on 107 cases of glaucoma and 83 cases of RP who consulted the low-vision clinic at Inouye Eye Hospital. There were 67 males and 40 females with glaucoma, and 48 males and 35 females with RP. Clinical characteristics and QOL were evaluated by The 25-item National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire(VFQ-25).

Results:The age averaged 67.6±14.2 years in glaucoma and 56.1±16.6 years in RP patients. The difference was significant(p<0.0001). Rate of employment was 69.7% in glaucoma patients and 70.6% in RP patients. The total VFQ score(composite 7)was significantly lower in glaucoma patients at 36.3±14.4 than RP patients at 46.9±19.2(p=0.0001). The scores in glaucoma patients were significantly lower in RP patients regarding general vision, ocular pain, near activities, distance activities, social functioning, mental health, role difficulties, dependency, and color vision(p<0.05).

Conclusion:Scores were lower in glaucoma than RP patients regarding all the items except general health, peripheral vision and driving in VFQ-25. Glaucoma patients seemed to have lower QOL regarding physical health, mental health and social life than RP patients.
