Abstract Purpose:To investigate the use of utilization of long-term care insurance for patients who visited the low vision(LV)outpatient clinic at Inoue Eye Hospital.

Patients and Methods:Ninety-six patients aged over 65 years who visited the LV outpatient clinic over a 2-year period from January 2019 were included in the study. We retrospectively reviewed the clinical records on the use of utilization of long-term care insurance.

Results:The mean age was 75±7 years(range 65-92 years:39 men, 57 women). The most common cause was glaucoma in 43 cases. The mean functional acuity score of functional visual score(FVS)was 53±30(about 0.1 in Snellen acuity). The utilization of visual impairment handbook was 99%, and the utilization of long-term care insurance was 28%. All five patients had severe disabilities of Grade 2 or higher and FVS scores of 0-26(mean:6±10;blind range).

Conclusions:Patients over 65 years of age who visited the LV outpatient clinic at Inoue Eye Hospital had severe glaucoma. The use of the handbook was high;however, the use of long-term care insurance was low. Long-term care insurance is a system that can help patients and their families;therefore, it needs to be highlighted.
