Abstract Purpose:Eyelid tattooing is a widely performed cosmetic procedure and involves injecting pigment into the skin to adjust the eyebrows and eyeliners. A medical license is required to perform this procedure;however, many facilities are operated by unqualified people. There have been many reports of skin and eye disorders as a result of improper treatment. Here, we report a case of corneal epithelial and conjunctival erosion in both eyes, developed after undergoing eyelid tattooing.

Case:A 40-year-old woman visited our hospital with complaints of binocular pain and lacrimation immediately after the procedure. Corrected visual acuity was Vd=(0.5)Vs=(0.5). Anterior ocular findings showed corneal erosion in both eyes. The patient was diagnosed with drug-induced corneal damage due to a local anesthetic used on the skin. The patient was treated by instilling 0.3% tosufloxacin and 0.1% betamethasone. Improvement was observed after a week from the start of treatment, with no complications or after-effects.

Conclusions:Since the demand for eyelid tattooing has increased in recent years, it is expected that the number of complications will also increase in the future. As an ophthalmologist, it is important to be aware that this procedure might cause eye damage.
