Abstract Purpose:To study the effect of diquafosol sodium(diquafosol) in glaucoma patients with dry eye syndrome receiving anti-glaucoma medications.

Methods:Fifty-four glaucoma patients receiving anti-glaucoma medications who complained of dry eye symptoms were included in this study. Their mean age was 77.8±8.3 years and they comprised of 37 females and 17 males. After diquafosol was administered, the subjective and objective symptoms were studied over 6 months. The subjective symptoms were evaluated using ocular surface disease index, and the corneal epithelial disorder was studied using Oxford scheme.

Results:The patients complaining of dry eye symptoms were significantly older and used more anti-glaucoma drugs than those not complaining(p=0.0054;p=0.0004). After diquafosol was administered, the intraocular pressure did not change significantly during 6 months. The tear film break-up time and corneal epithelial damage score at baseline and at 6 months were 2.1±1.0 seconds and 2.9±2.9 and 4.3±0.9 seconds and 0.2±0.4, respectively(p<0.0001;p<0.0001). The subjective symptom score also significantly improved from 22.1±6.1 to 19.8±6.1(p=0.0420).

Conclusions:The administration of diaquafosol induced a significant improvement in the subjective and objective symptoms in patients with dry eye symptoms receiving anti-glaucoma medications. No significant change in intraocular pressure was observed.
