Purpose:To evaluate the state of use of eyedrops by patients of open-angle glaucoma, and to assess related factors. Method:A total of 168 glaucoma patients were interviewed who were randomly chosen out of those attending Saga University Hospital. The series comprised 74 males(42%)and 94 females(58%). Their ages ranged from 21 to 84 years, average 61 years. Results:Eyedrops were being instilled in full accordance to prescriptions by 84% of patients. Instillation of eyedrops was missed one to three times a month by 8% of patients. Eyedrops were more correctly used by patients with more advanced visual field defect. A significant correlation was present between complicance and mean deviation(MD)by program 30-2 of Humphrey visual field analysis. Compliance was worse in instillation in daytime than that in the morning or evening(p<0.05). Conclusion:Eyedrops are more correctly used by glaucoma patients with more advanced visual field defect. Improved awareness of glaucoma may result in better complicance.
