Abstract Purpose:To report a case with atopic dermatitis, proliferative vitreoretinopathy, and multiple retinal cyst. The retina became reattached after vitreous surgery and creation of large retinal tear.

Case:A 18-year-old male was referred to us for retinal detachment in the right eye. He had been suffering from atopic dermatitis.

Findings and Clinical Course:Corrected visual acuity was 0.05 right and 1.2 left. The right eye showed retinal detachment in the lower temporal quadrant involving the macula. Multiple areas of retinal cyst were present associated with subretinal proliferation. An oral tear was detected during vitreous surgery. Intentional large retinal tear was created through which the subretinal proliferative tissue was removed. The vitreous was replaced by perfluorocarbon and then by silicone oil. The retina became reattached with visual acuity of 0.1 23 months after surgery.

Conclusion:This case illustrates that retinal cysts may develop in slowly progressive retinal detachment and that removal of subretinal proliferative tissue through a large retinal tear may induce reattachment of the retina.
