Abstract Purpose:We examined the differences between actively induced look optokinetic nystagmus(LOKN)and passively induced stare optokinetic nystagmus(SOKN)using an eye tracker.

Subjects and Method:We measured the gaze positions of 23 healthy subjects using a Tobii TX300 eye tracker. Visual stimuli consisted of square-wave grating with a spatial frequency of 0.3 cycles/degree and moving every 5 seconds in horizontal direction at 5, 10, and 15 degrees/s(dps). We calculated the slow-phase velocity of OKN from the gaze position to derive the gain from most frequent velocity.

Result:The slow-phase velocity of LOKN was significantly faster as compared SOKN(p<0.0001). For each stimulus velocity(5, 10, and 15 dps), the gain of LOKN was 0.90, 0.75, and 0.64, while that of SOKN was 0.30, 0.08, and 0.06.

Conclusion:Analysis of the slow-phase velocity of OKN which was recorded using an eye tracker revealed significant differences between LOKN and SOKN.
