Abstract Purpose: To report the loss of corneal endothelial cells after cataract surgery in eyes with and without pseudoexfoliation syndrome(PE).

Cases: This study was made on 106 eyes of 86 cases who had PE and who received cataract surgery during the past 3 years. Another series of 98 eyes of 76 cases who had no PE and who received cataract surgery served as control. Findings were compared 3 months after surgery.

Results: Eyes with PE showed significantly less endothelial cell density, smaller pupil diameter, higher incidence of glaucoma, longer duration of surgery, more need to mechanically dilate the pupil, and higher aqueous flare before and surgery when compared than eyes without PE. Corneal endothelial cell density decreased by 2.9±5.9% in eyes with PE and by 2.6±4.9% in eyes without PE three months after surgery. The difference was not significant.

Conclusion: No difference was present in the rate of corneal endothelial density loss between eyes with and without PE when evaluated 3 months after cataract surgery.
