We evaluated corneal endothelial cells in 1,608 eyes of 804 patients prior to cataract surgery. The series comprised 279 males and 525 females. Their age ranged from 25 to 96 years, average 73 years. Decrease in corneal endothelial cell density was defined as reduction by twice the standard deviation from the known value for healthy persons in each age group. There were 86 patients(10.7%)who had decreased corneal endothelial cell density. The presumed underlying causes were diabetes mellitus(23.3%),closed-angle glaucoma(9.3%),cornea guttata(7.0%)and others. No exact cause could be identified in 44 cases(51.2%). The findings show that reduction in endothelial cells is present in about 10% of cases awaiting cataract surgery. We advocate evaluation of corneal endothelial cells as a routine procedure prior to intraocular surgery.
