Abstract Purpose: To present a review of prescriptions for absorptive lenses in our institution.

Cases and Method: This study was made on 61 cases who received prescription for absorptive lenses for photophobia in the past 55 months. The series comprised 30 males and 31 females. The age ranged from 12 to 87 years, average 68 years. Photophobia was apparently due to retinitis pigmentosa 17 cases, diabetic retinopathy 13 cases, glauoma 9 cases and age-related macular degeneration 6 cases among others.

Results: The color of absorptive lens was green in 46 cases(75%), brown in 8 cases(13%), and gray in 7 cases(12%). Brown lenses were more frequently prescribed for patients with diabetic retinopathy. Dark lenses with absorption by 75% or greater were prescribed for more than 50% of patients with retinitis pigmentosa, glaucoma, or age-related macular degeneration.

Conclusion: Green lenses were more frequently prescribed for all type of eye diseases causing photophobia.
