Abstract. Purpose:To report a case of radiation retinopathy with neovascular glaucoma following heavy ion radiotherapy for paranasal carcinoma. Case:A 52-year-old female received heavy ion radiation for carcinoma of the left ethmoidal bone. The dosis totaled 3.8 GyE. The left eye developed hyphema and elevated intraocular pressure(IOP)with impaired visual acuity 30 months later. She sought medical advice by us another 2 years later. Findings:Corrected visual acuity was 1.2 right and hand motion left with IOP of 13 mmHg right and 32 mmHg left. The left eye showed hyphema, rubeosis iridis, atrophy of the iris, and vitreous hemorrhage. Vitreous surgery showed soft retinal exudates and optic atrophy as intraoperative finding. IOP has been maintained at 21 mmHg with multiple topical medications. There has been no pain or recurrence of carcinoma for 6 months until present. Conclusion:This case illustrates that heavy ion radiotherapy for paranasal malignancy may induce radiation retinopathy with neovascular glaucoma.
