  • Look Inside

We evaluated a consecutive series of 285 eyes in 260 cases of senile disciform macular degeneration (SDMD) during the foregoing 78-month period. We paid particular attention to vitreous hemorrhage as a complication of SDMD. The maculopathy appear-ed as hematoma beneath the retinal pigment epith-elium (sub-RPE hematoma) in 42 eyes, 42 cases, in the series. Vitreous hemorrhage developed in thistype only and at an incidence of 50% (21 eyes).

There was a definite tendency for large sub-RPE hematomas to develop vitreous hemorrhage. Mas-sive and persistent vitreous hemorrhage developed in 13 eyes with sub-RPE hematoma extending to the equatorial region. Outcome of vitrectomy in 11 eyes was generally favorable. Relatively early vitrectomy is indicated for massive vitreous hemor-rhage associated with senile disciform macular degeneration.
