  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We reviewed a consecutive series of 273 eyes which underwent surgery for retinal detachment during the 10-year period through 1986. This study included only the patients aged 65 years or more and only those who could be followed up at least 6 months after surgery. The present series was char-acterized by a relatively high incidence of choroidal detachment and corneal opacity prior to surgery.

We mainly employed conventional surgical approaches, including scleral encircling 108 eyes, segmental scleral buckling 131 eyes and vitreous surgery 40 eyes.

The retina could be attached in 258 eyes (94.5 %), of which retinal detachment recurred in 33 eyes. As an overall evaluation, the visual acuity improved in 110 eyes, remained unchanged in 123 eyes, and deteriorated in 40 eyes.
