  • Look Inside

We evaluated the clinical efficacy of intravenous-ly administered human immune globulin prepara-tions in 20 eyes with stromal herpetic keratitis in its active stage. We treated 11 eyes with intact globulin, or globulin N, and 9 eyes with pepsin -treated globulin, or globulin V. As a regular rule, either globulin preparation was intravenously ad-ministered for 5 consecutive days, 2.5 g per day.The clinical effects were judged on the basis of slitlamp findings and visual acuity 2 weeks and 3 months after institution of therapy.

Globulins N and V were both effective in improv-ing the visual acuity at 2 weeks. Improvement in visual acuity set in earlier with globulin N than globulin V. Edema of the corneal stroma improved also with both globulin preparations.

As an overall estimation, both intact and pepsin -treated human immune globulins were effective in the treatment of stromal herpetic keratitis.
