  • Look Inside

A 29-year-old female presented with branch retinal vein occlusion in her left eye. The occlusion occurred at the arteriovenous crossing along the superior temporal vein, just distal to the first bifur-cation. There were minimum findings suggestive of hypertensive retinopathy or arteriosclerosis. Other ocular findings were within normal limits.

The patient had been hypertensive and undertreatment for the past 2 years. She manifested hypokalemia and was diagnosed as primary aldos-teronism.

Branch retinal vein occlusion is a rare occurrence in subjects under 40 years of age. We presumed that the primary aldosteronism and systemic hyperten-sion was causatively related with disturbed blood flow at the site of arteriovenous crossing and result-ed in branch retinal vein occlusion.
