We evaluated a consecutive series of 153 eyes, 152 patients, who presented with bacterial keratitisduring the 7-year period from 1979 through 1985.

The majority of patients were aged 50 years or more, with an average of 50.1 years. The presumed predisposing factors were variable : corneal foreign body 31 eyes, contact lens wear 17 eyes, consequent to intraocular surgery 13 eyes, and topical use of corticosteroid 8 eyes.

Four-fifths of the patients (125 eyes, 81%) were already under treatment with antibiotics when theywere referred to us. Positive corneal culture was obtained, therefore, in only 60 eyes (39%). The isolated organisms were : Staphylococcus epider-midis 33 eyes, Staphylococcus aureus 13, Pseudomonas aeruginosa 9, Streptococcus pneumoniae 7 and fungus 1. There was a definite tendency for Pseudomonas aeruginosa to be less frequently involved in corneal infection whencompared with our data over the previous 7-year period (1964-70).
