We evaluated the effect of phosphonoacetic acid (PAA) ophthalmic solution as applied to experi-mentally produced herpes simplex infection of the cornea.

Fifteen Japanese white rabbits, weighing 2.5 kg, were inoculated with HSV-1 virus, HF strain, in the cornea. We used Shioda's multiple microinoculation technique by gently abrading the anesthetized cor-nea.

Treatment of thus produced superficial herpetic keratitis was started on postinfection day 2 and continued 3 times daily for 15 days, either with topical 5-iodo-2'-deoxyuridine (IDU), acy-cloguanosine (ACV), or PAA.

Topical PAA instillation was generally effective for superficial herpetic keratitis in rabbits. Corneal ulcers disappeared in 7 to 9 days after treatment with IDU, ACV or PAA. When judged with hypere-mia, secretion and corneal ulcer as parameters, IDU, ACV and PAA were judged to be equally effective.
