  • Look Inside

We performed intracapsular cataract extraction in 376 eyes, 300 patients, at three sanatoriums for the lepra during an 8-year period through 1982. The operated eyes had been affected by various compli-cations due to lepra : lagophthalmos 68%, corneal stromal opacity 55%, miosis 84%, history of uveitis78%, and posterior synechia of the iris 68%.

Postoperative visual acuity improved by more than 2 lines in 297 eyes (79%). There was no improvement or even deterioration in vision in 45 eyes (12%). The postoperative visual acuity was implicated by lagophthalmos (p<0.10), and either of corneal opacity, corneal vascularization, band-shaped corneal degeneration, anterior synechia or glaucoma (p<0.01 for each). The prognosis con-cerning the postoperative visual acuity was not affected by miosis or posterior synechia.
