  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

In our belief that photocoagulation is the treatment of choice in retinopathy of prematurity, we developed laser photocoagulation system for use in premature infants in supine position. The system consists of Majima 2-mirror contact lens for premature infant, a laser photocoagulator Ophthalas® (biophysic medi-cal), and a Zeiss OPMI-6 operation microscope.

We treated 12 eyes in 7 cases with this procedure. In 9 eyes, the optimum size and power output of photocoagulation was attained in fundus areas as intended. In these eyes, the retinopathy started to regress a few days later and adequate scar formation resulted in 2 weeks. In the remaining 3 eyes (2 cases), xenon photocoagulation and cryocautery had already been applied before the patients were referred to us. In these eyes, laser photocoagulation with our system was less effective because of the severity of retinopathy. Our system, which allows la:;er photocoagulation in patients in supine position, proved thus to be of value in safety, ease of application and effectiveness in retinopathy of prematurity.
