  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We examined 73 children who were born with birthweight of 1,500 g or less and who were now 4 to 11 years of age as to developmental quotient (DQ), flash-visual evoked potential (F-VEP) and auditory brainstem response (ABR). We then evaluated the implication of severity of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) on these parameters of psychomotor development.

The DQ averaged 99.1 in infants with severe ROPand 108.7 in those with mild or no ROP. The differ-ence was significant. Incidence of mental retarda-tion was pot correlated with the severity of ROP if one assumes the DQ value of 85 or less as the criterium for mental retardation. P 100 latency in F -VEP was significantly longer in infants with severe ROP than in others. The prolongation of latency in ABR was independent on the severity of ROP. These findings seemed to imply that the severity of ROP is correlated with some aspects of psychomotor development.
