  • Look Inside

We evaluated the incidence and eye involvements in multiple sclerosis in our department over the past 7-year period through March 1985. We observed a total of 57 cases with multiple sclerosis out of a total of 33,313 outpatients. There were 19 males and 38 females. The age of onset of the disease averaged 33.9 years. There were 158 cases with optic neuritis in the present series of 33,313 patients. The optic neuritis was found to be due to multiple sclerosis in 38 cases (24%) and to be of unclarified etiology in 62 cases (37%).Out of the latter group with optic neuritis of unknown etiology, 20 cases developed multiple sclerosis during the follow-up period (24%). These 20 cases were pre-dominantly in the age group between 20 and 39 years.
