We evaluated refractive errors and strabismus in 343 cases of mentally retarded infants and children. They were suffering from cerebral palsy, which was the most frequent underlying disorder, followed by sequealae of meningitis or encephalitis, congenital hydrocephalus, microcephalus, sequealae of intra-cranial hemorrhage, Down syndrome, develop-mental delay and others. Refractive errors were present in 79.3% of the cases and adequate spec-tacles were prescribed to 70% of them. The spec-tacles could be tolerated by 70%, of which 28% showed improvement in visual acuity.
