  • Look Inside

A female child, 12 years in age, was diagnosed as typical achromatopsia with best corrected visual acuity of 0.15 in either eye. She was evaluated as to psycho-physical features.

The Rayleigh equations with Nagel model I anomaloscope indicated the color matching to be done only for the rod photopigment. Spectral sensitivities in dark-and light-adapted states showed similar spectral characteristics to the normal rods. Directional sensitiv-ities on white background were essentialy the same as the normal cones.

These findings were in conformity with those by Alpern in 1974 that the high-intensity photoreceptors are morphologically similar to cones but that they contain rhodopsin or photopigments with spectral char-acteristics similar to rhodopsin. Also, the dark adapta-tion curve around the point of fixation showed two components, suggesting the presence of two kinds of dark adaptation functions.
