  • Look Inside

I evaluated a consecutive series of 48 eyes (39 patients) with open-angle glaucoma treated by argon laser trabeculoplasty. As a general rule, laser was applied along the trabecular meshwork subtending 120°, with the mean number of laser spots of 34 per eye. The follow-up averaged 11.4 months.

The intraocular pressure was brought under control in 28 eyes (58%) after one treatment session and in 71% after three sessions. Argon laser trabeculoplasty was significantly more effective in patients over 60 years of age than in younger age group. A better control was chieved by laser trabeculoplasty in eyes with pretreat-ment pressure level of 25 mmHg or less. Whenever the post-laser pressure was 20 mmHg or less one week after treatment, the beneficial effect lasted throughout the period of observation.
