The clinical study of modulation transfer function

緒　言

　近年，光学系の特性を表わすために空間周波数特性，すなわちModulation Transfer Function（以下MTFと略す）という概念が導入され，光学系の画像処理能力をあらわすのに用いられるようになつた^1）。最近この概念を，人間の視覚系に導入して眼のMTFを測定しようとする試みがなされ，いくつかの測定方法が開発された。その結果，視覚系MTFは，多くの情報を含みしかも普遍的な視機能表示となることが明らかとなつてきた^2）。

　しかし最近までは，MTFは視覚の基礎的なメカニズムを研究する生理学あるいは心理学の領域のものと考えられ，臨床眼科への応用は始められたばかりである^3〜5）。

The modulation transfer function of the spatial properties of the part of the visual system between the retina and the brain of patients with various eye diseases is discussed.

Attenuation of the modulation transfer func-tion of the retina-brain system in low, middle and/or high frequency rangs was observed in patients with amblyopia, retino-choroidal diseases or optic nerve diseases.
