  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Corneal chrysiasis was clinically studied in 45 rheumatoid arthritis patients who were under longterm systemic gold salt therapy. Gold de-posits in the cornea were absent in all of 11 patients who received a total dose of less than 500mg of gold salts. Gold deposits were seen in 17 of 21 patients (81%) who received 500 to 1,500mg, and in 11 of 13 patients (85%) who received 1,500mg or more.

Deposits appeared first in the superficial cor-neal stromal layer as glittering particles. As the administration was continued further, pur-plish brown pigmentation developed in the de-eper corneal stroma.
