緒言

　昭和30年に結成された，日本トラコーマ研究斑のテーマの一つとして日本に於けるトラ撲滅基準の制定の為，班員は各々モデル地区を選定し，各種団体と提携，協力し，集団治療を行うようその要項が班長故中村康教授から提示された。

　私共（研究班員大石）は山口県下のモデル地区トラ撲滅運動を計画するに際し，既に宇部市に於ける過去7ヵ年の経験に照して^1）〜10），候補地を選定して集団治療を行いその成果を比較しようと考えた。それには先般私共が行つた県下トラ実態調査^11）がよい資料となつて，大島郡東和町を推薦した。

The authors examined primary and secondary school children in a model area in Yama-guchi Prefecture, and obtained the following results from the mass treatment of them with 1% Achromycin ointment during 4 months.

1) The morbidity of trachoma was 252 by 2532 (9.95%) in primary school and 185 by 1438 (12.8%) in secondary school.

2) The morbidity went down from 9.95% to 2.0% in primary school and from 12.8% to 3.3% in secondary school the 4 months' treatment. The morbid term is the more advan-ced, the healing rate is the lower. 94.3% of false cases were cured.
