  • Look Inside

Lens changes associated with long-term treat-ment with psychotropics, mainly chlorpromazi-ne, were studied in 9 mentally ill patients. Their ages averaged 33 years.

Various characteristic lens opacities were detected by slitlamp examination. Four patients showed fine powdery or partially punctate spots on the extreme surface of the lens at theanterior polar region. The other 5 patients showed either punctate, radial, starfish-shaped or complete lens opacities.

Intracapsular lens extraction was performed for both eyes of a patient showing complete lens opacity and the removed lens was submi-tted to electron microscopic studies.
