制限された視野による文章判読

Reading Performance with Restricted Visual Field

緒言

　おれわれ人間の眼の網膜上の特性は写真フィルムのように一様ではなく，視力は中心窩が最も優れている^1）。したがつて細かいものを識別しようとするときは，眼球を移動させ中心窩で捕えていると考えて良い。しかし中心窩はかなり狭い範囲であるので，細かいものを識別しているときでも中心窩の回り，かなりの網膜部分を使用しているものと思われる。

　今回われわれは，文章を読むという比較的視力を要する場合，中心窩の回りどの位まで活用しているかを調べた。具体的な方法としては，中心窩を中心にある範囲だけ文字を見ることができるように人工的に視野を制限した。この制限された視野でもつて文章を読んだ場合いかなることになるか，視野の大きさと文章を読むスピード，そのときの眼球運動の状況に関して計測を行なつた。

Reading performance was studied while subje-cts read Japanese sentences with the restricted visual field. With a very small visual field, it took a very long time to read, and the eye movements were composed of very small sacca-des. When a wider visual field were given, the higher speed of reading and the larger saccadic eye movements were observed. However, with wide visual fields more than 8 degrees of visual angle, the reading speed and the sacca-dic size were almost the same.
