Abstract. Purpose:To report the relationship between dynamics of human corneal endothelial cells and findings by specular microscopy. Cases and Method:Endothelial cells in the corneal apex in both eyes of 8 healthy persons were recorded by specular microscope(KC4000, Konan・Medical, Inc.)once a week for two years. The series comprised one male and 7 females. The age ranged from 22 to 76 years. Another group of 290 persons were similar examined more than twice over a period of 3 years at our contact lens service. The series comprised 67 males and 223 females. The age ranged from 12 to 76 years. The area and size of endothelial cells that appear repeatedly were checked for variability and rate of correlation. Results:The length of largest side of each polygon was 2.5 times of the added length of the periphery. Area of each endothelial cells showed positive correlation with the total length of the periphery(p=0.02). This finding seemed to show that corneal endothelial cells are changing its shape while remaining constant in size. There was no change in the arrangement of endothelial cells with low value in regression coefficient of the area at 0.01±0.04. Findings by longitudinal observation were in accord with cross-sectional study. Conclusion:Endothelial cells in corneal apex may show changes in the side facing the anterior chamber and may be fixed at the basal side.
