Abstract. Purpose:To report a case of retinal vasculitis following acute episode of chickenpox. Case:A 31-year-old male presented with blurring in the left eye. He had developed vesicles over his body 16 days before and been diagnosed with chickenpox. Vesicles turned into scarring 8 days later following systemic treatment with antiviral agents. Findings:Corrected visual acuity was 1.2 right and 0.6 left. The left eye showed mutton-fat deposits, cells in the aqueous, vitreous opacity and retinal vasculitis all over the fundus. Varicella-zoster virus DNA was isolated from the aqueous. Similar to therapeutic regimen for acute retinal necrosis, he was given acyclovir, betamethasone, and aspirin. Vitreous opacity disappeared 2 weeks later with visual acuity improving to 1.2. Conclusion:This case illustrates that retinal vasculitis may follow after chickenpox infection and that systemic antiviral agents may be effective.
