Abstract. Purpose:To report a case of iron foreign body retained in the eye and removed one year later. Case:A 29-year-old male felt a foreign body sensation in the right eye when working with a hammer and nail. He visited a local physician but received no treatment. He visited us 15 month later for failing vision in the right eye. Findings and Clinical Course:His corrected visual acuity was 0.3 right and 1.2 left. Intraocular pressure was within normal range. The right eye showed cataract, siderosis, and a foreign body in the superior fundus periphery. The right eye was treated by lensectomy, vitrectomy, and removal of foreign body. The foreign body was a nail 7 mm in length. Its whole surface was covered by semitransparent membrane and was firmly adherent to the retina. Visual acuity improved to 1.2 two months later. Conclusion:This case illustrates that recovery of vision is possible even after intraocular retention of a large foreign body over a prolonged period.
