Abstract. Purpose:To report acute retinal necrosis due to varicella zoster herpes virus in a young female. Case and Findings:A 15-year-old female presented with floaters, blurring and pain in her left eye since 4 days before. Corrected visual acuity was 1.2 in either eye. The left eye showed severe iridocyclitis with mutton-fat keratic precipitates, granular or geographic precipitates in the fundus, occlusive retinal angiopathy, and hyperemia and swelling of optic disc. Polymerase chain reaction of the aqueous showed varicella zoster herpes virus as the cause of acute retinal necrosis. Systemic acyclovir and corticosteroid was followed by resolution of intraocular inflammation 4 weeks later. Conclusion:Acute retinal necrosis due to varicella zoster herpes virus may run a protracted course in senile persons. The present juvenile case resulted in rapid cure due to prompt genetic diagnosis and treatment.
