Abstract. Purpose:To identify predictive factors for visual outcome after photodynamic therapy(PDT)for age-related macular degeneration(AMD). Cases:This retrospective study was made on 84 eyes of 76 patients who received PDT for AMD and who could be followed up for one year or longer. The series comprised 70 male and 14 female eyes. The age ranged from 51 to 84, average 74 years. There were 69 eyes with AMD in its narrow sense and 15 eyes with polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy(PCV). Results:Visual outcome was better in PCV than AMD(p<0.0005). The final visual acuity was significantly correlated with pretreatment visual acuity(p<0.0001)and with the presumed duration before treatment(p<0.05). Final visual acuity was better when treated within one year after onset of symptom(p<0.0001). Conclusion:In PDT for AMD, final visual acuity is significantly correlated with pretreatment visual acuity. Better visual outcome can be expected when PDT is performed within one year after onset of AMD.
