Abstract. Purpose:To report a case of macular hole caused by contracture of congenital epipapillary membrane. Case:A 21-year-old woman presented with metamorphopsia in her left eye. Her corrected visual acuity was 1.5 right and 1.0 left. The left fundus showed fibrous membrane extending from the disc margin to superior temporal retina. Six years later, metamorphopsia in her left eye had progressed with visual acuity down to 0.5. Macular hole was present in the left eye. She was treated by vitrectomy, peeling of internal limiting membrane, and removal of epiretinal membrane. There was no posterior vitreous detachment and no taut vitreoretinal adhesion. Five months after surgery, macular hole had closed with visual acuity of 1.0 and no metamorphopsia. Conclusion:This case illustrates that macular hole may develop by contracture of congenital epipapillary membrane.
