Abstract. Purpose:A survey was conducted to form the basis of a common follow-up schedule after cataract surgery. We report the results of questionnaires to ophthalmologists in Osaka as to when to permit patients to take a shower, bath, assisted or unassisted shampoo after uneventful surgery. Material and Method:Questionnaires requiring signatures were mailed to 97 ophthalmologists in the vicinity of our hospital. Result:Eighty-one(83.5%)responses were collected. On taking showers, two days after surgery was the most frequent response at 39%, but opinions varied from 1 to 5 days after surgery. The opinion of the majority is that patients should start to take baths after 7 days(1-14 days), to shampoo their hair with assistance after 4-5 days(1-20 days)and to shampoo their hair without assistance after 7 days(5-30 days)from the date of surgery. Conclusion:There is wide variance among doctors as to when to permit patients to clean themselves after surgery. It is important to incorporate different opinions when making a common follow-up schedule.
